Sheeter Graffiti

Built around the music of Arnob, Sheeter Graffiti will unfold as an experience with a narrative structure woven together with recitations, paintings, sculptures, installations, video projections and physical performances.

Sheeter Graphiti
The Performers Independent launched its first project “Sheeter Graffiti” (Fall Graffiti) in December 2012, when it responded to the Indian government’s rigid visa policies against artistic citizens of Bangladesh by organizing a two hour experimental public live performance of Arnob, a leading exponent of contemporary Bengali songs through Skype at Kalamandir auditorium, Kolkata. We complemented his performance with non narrative mimetic movements with around fifteen performers including children as well as theatre and film personalities like Joyraj Bhattacharya and Mom Bhattacharya from Kolkata. This entire project was executed with the help of individual donation and public subscriptions. Please visit the links given below to get a detailed view.

Abol Tabol
The performance was based on Sukumar Ray's nonsense poetry collection Abol Tabol. Dressed explicitly, made up minimally to enhance the folkish grotesque, where the materials of makeup stand on their own, revealing an intended awkwardness of the representation that is symbolic to the ideologies that mask the gap between being and appearance. With minimal humorist performative movements, accompanied by the reading of verses from the text Abol Tabol in serious manner subverting the intended logic of the text, the performance moved between the exterior and the interior space of the place Tripti Mitra Shabha Ghar.

@tagore

@tagore
There is a space in front. Artists meet on the subject of Rabindranath Tagore in a Loudon Street Gallery.
The Gallery Upstairs and Performers independent put up an exhibition titled @tagore during the last week of March 2012. The show will be inaugurated on 23rd March, Friday 2012 at 5.00 P.M. The venue is Gallery
 Upstairs, 16, Loudon Street, Kolkata – 700019.
Individuals from diverse disciplines such as Painting, Sculpture, New Media, Performance Art & Science will participate in sharing and presenting their respective reflections on Tagore or rather their very personal looking at the master.Need not dare to work on him. We look at Tagore. It is that our positions in the collective are different and so are our views or seeing. From looking at Tagore from our isolations and the solitude of the collective we develop this show which we name @tagore.
Apart from traditional media like paintings and drawings we will try to present other practices alongwith. We will have a special day of performance when the famous dialogues between Tagore & Einstein will be cultivated with interventions of music and visuals. This interactive performance was performed in the Kala Bhavan Shantiniketan and also in the hall of Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in recent times.
We have also a very near and contemporary touch with Germany in the exhibition since we have among us our artist friends Sylvia Winkler and Stephan Koperl working for the show.
With multiple perspectives collaborating we look forward. We don’t illustrate, but intervene.
